FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long is a typical DBT program?

The treatment length of a comprehensive DBT program, as informed by research, is on average one year. However, depending on your specific concerns and commitment in program participation, the treatment duration may be longer or shorter as a result.

How much time a week would I need to commit if I participate in the program?

If you participate in the DBT program, you can expect to commit approximately 3 hours per week. This typically includes:

  • 1 hour of individual therapy session

  • 2 hours of skills training group

Some weeks may require a bit more time for phone coaching, depending on your needs and where you are in the program.

If I only do one part of the program, such as skills training group only, will that be effective?

According to research, a comprehensive DBT program that includes individual therapy, skills training group, phone coaching and therapist consultation team, is the most effective approach to treatment.

I’ve heard the term “DBT-informed therapy”, is that effective?

According to rigorous research, a comprehensive DBT program is the most effective approach to treatment. If your therapist isn’t offering all components of DBT, it is not DBT.

Are virtual DBT programs effective?

Recent research indicates that there is no efficacy in virtual implementation of DBT program. For individuals who may experience suicidal ideation or behaviours, data suggests that virtual DBT, especially virtual skills training group only, may increase suicidal risk as a result.

Do I pay for the entire program upfront?

No, you do not need to pay for the entire program upfront. Services are billed after each appointment. The only exception is the skills training group, which is billed by the module (typically covering several weeks at a time).
