WHAT IS DBT?
A treatment program designed to help you build a life worth living.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) was developed by psychologist Dr. Marsha Linehan at the University of Washington. Initially created to support individuals struggling with parasuicidal behaviours, self-harm, and emotional dysregulation, DBT has since been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of issues across the lifespan—including suicidal behaviours, substance use, trauma, anxiety, and depression in adults, youth, and families.
At its core, DBT integrates principles from dialectics, behavioural psychology, and mindfulness.
Dialectics is the concept that two seemingly opposing ideas can both hold truth, and that resolution comes through synthesis and balance. DBT helps people shift from rigid, black-and-white thinking to a more flexible mindset, improving both emotional resilience and interpersonal effectiveness.
Behavioural psychology emphasizes that behaviour is shaped by consequences. In DBT, clients learn to examine their own behavioural patterns, identify what reinforces those behaviours, and apply targeted strategies to create lasting, positive change.
Mindfulness, rooted in Buddhist tradition, teaches clients to observe their thoughts and feelings without becoming overwhelmed or reactive. Through this practice, individuals develop access to their Wise Mind, a balanced state that integrates emotional insight with logical thinking, leading to more grounded decisions and greater emotional stability.
Our DBT programs bring these foundational elements together in a structured and practical way, equipping you with concrete, effective skills to help you build a life that is meaningful and worth living.
